FOUNDER STORY

Joyce Williey

A native Zambian, Joyce Elizabeth Williey is the 2nd child and 1st girl of 13 children. Growing up in a large family, she was blessed with an abundance of love and support from her family and neighbors. She was also sent to Church every Sunday where Joyce developed a deep connection to her faith. It was her community and connection to God that provided a strong foundation and ultimately gave her the strength and courage to lead a life of God, grace, and giving.

As a young adult, Joyce had the opportunity to study at Bournemouth & Poole College in England. She graduated with a degree in Travel & Tourism. Through her subsequent career in tourism, she traveled to various parts of Europe and Africa, including her home country of Zambia. She got to see the many beautiful attractions Europe and Africa had to offer, but Joyce could not help but be drawn to the women and children she observed begging for money on the streets and searching desperately for food in trash cans. It was her weekend camping trips in near villages in Livingstone that had the greatest impact. The scripture James 1:27 echoed in her

head, “Religion that our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after the orphans and the widows in their distress.” Visiting their villages, Joyce met widows who were left with children and no skills or means of income, as well as orphans as young as 8 years old who lost both parents and had no choice but to drop out of school so they could care for their younger siblings. These were people who were doing whatever it took to care for one another,
even if it meant hard labor, begging, or marriage as a child bride.

Even after moving to the United States in 2005, Joyce continued to ponder James 1:27 and knew she needed to find a way to help these people who deserve a chance at a better life. She ultimately realized that what she needed to do was provide them with the means to be self-sufficient. She needed to teach them skills and give them tools to make a living.

Although, at the time, Joyce did not have the means to help in the way she knew was needed, she held on to this mission until God aligned her life with several women in Zambia. In 2014, Joyce connected with 7 widows who attended a church in the Kasiya Village and provided them with a small, manual sewing machine. She empowered these women by not just providing this
tool, but by showing them how empowering it could be to be able to provide for themselves. This seemingly small act was the birth of something much larger - it was the birth of The Wings of Love Foundation.

Inspired by the love of helping and empowering the less privileged both spiritually and physically, Joyce has grown the foundation into a powerful movement to eradicate poverty amongst widows and orphans in the rural Kasiya area. Joyce is delighted to report that her foundation is currently empowering 35 widows and sponsoring 10 orphans so they can return to
school, but the mission is not complete. Joyce Williey and the Wings of Love Foundation seek to help more widows, as well as send more orphans back to school.

Auggie Shinchende

Auggie Shinchende is a peoples’ person. From childhood he has always loved working and interacting with others around him. Inspired by his grandmother who always helped community members and strangers alike, with food and shelter as he observed during his teens. Auggie’s love to improve other people lives grew throughout his high school years, participating in various outreach feeding and clothing programs done by the church for the needy in the rural communities. While in high school, when his family could no longer manage to support him, he was helped by several well-wishers to pay for his school fees, while some fellow students helped him with other school requirements.

This inspired him to study public health, project management and law as tools and skills that will empower him to effectively fulfill his desire to contribute to a healthy and wellbeing of others who are less privileged. For 20 years now since graduation from college, Auggie has worked with various organizations of different capacities on health and social programs addressing the needs of venerable groups such as orphans, windows, people living with HIV and youths. His selfless attributes are enabling him to work for charity, contributing his time, expertise and experience helping Wings of Love Foundation reach its vision in Zambia and beyond.
